"The Mad Food Rush"

As you walk into the plush, rather large restaurant, your first feeling is there are a lot of hungry people in Bangalore! But then when you see the spread, it is pretty obvious that it is the larger-than-life buffet spread which has probably attracted people from different walks of life and different age groups.

So why is this restaurant called Cafe Masala, I wonder. After all, the word Cafe makes one imagine a typical cafe with snacks and different kinds of coffee. However, the reasoning is very simple as Naveen Kumar, the Unit-in-charge explains. The name is a remake of a Bollywood masala movie. Just like a typical masala movie with its sweet emotions, spicy romance and hot action, Cafe Masala is set to tickle your taste buds and set you on a culinary trip.

Managed with skill in the typical BJN style, you are assured of a good time and excellent food. Chef Nirmal Kumar swears by his salads and desserts which he says are his signature items. Since I love salads, I head for the salad table and help myself to some rather large helpings of Mixed Fruit Chaat, Tandoori Chicken Potato Salad and Roasted Onion Broccoli and Tuna Salad.

There is a Chaat counter and a Continental counter which includes Spicy Tawa Fish, Cauliflower Broccoli Morney, Fried Falafal, Spicy Grilled Vegetable, Penne Veg Roso Pesto Sauce and Spaghetti Chicken Arabhitta. If you prefer Oriental then you must try the Chicken Winglets.

I am not a Chaat or Continental food fan, preferring the Dum Mutton Biriyan and the Murgh Elaichi Korma.

But I see that it is the Pizza Margaritta which is attracting a lot of attention and most everyone is walking away with a slice of the same.

At some point in time, I need to stop indulging in the main course, as the dessert counter is beckoning me with its puddings, pastries and kheer. Do you want description of the items I think I need to leave some things unsaid to let you go and experience it for yourselves!. So go ahead the buffet costs Rs.249/- + taxes (Monday to Thursday).

"Cafe with lots of masala"
Cafe Masala is brought to you by the BJN group, and has ‘Aromas of China’ and ‘Vaayu’ for neighbours on the top floor of Eva Mall, Brigade Road.
We made reservations in advance, and i think a wait of about 15 minutes would’ve happened if not for that. We were given a reasonably good table, with comfortable seating, though some poor staff were dealt with sternly by my wife when they tried to pull one of our chairs for an adjoining table.
While the menu does have some continental stuff, a lot of it is meant for the evening snacks category, and not dinner. But we did manage to get some corn soup, which was quite good. And like good mix and matchers, we ordered mutton pepper chops, murgh bhartha, kulcha and butter naan for the main course. The mutton chops gravy was awesome, though not recommended for people with low spice tolerance. The chicken was also good, but for once, was overshadowed by the above. And yes, special mention for the fact that they gave us a Lachcha Paratha instead of the Butter Naan, and when we pointed it out, we were told that this was how Butter Naan was made here, but it could be replaced. We’re yet to figure that out.
You’ll notice from later reviews that we are no novices when it comes to desserts, but this time, we were too stuffed, although the menu listed some decent options.
The pricing is as per the regular BJN standards, and all the above came upto about Rs.650.
The ambience is pretty good, somewhere between the rgular noisy neighbourhood cafe, but with an effort to make it look more organised. We noticed a lot of large groups there. And yes, there’s even a one-man-band, who plays requests. Heard him play MLTR and Bollywood numbers, so metal guys can consider that a warning.
Overall, it was quite a pleasant experience, and definitely makes it to the ‘please visit again’ list.

"binge on food.."
Cafe Masala a very unique name to have for a restaurant and the food spread is as unique as the name.
The spread is great and so is the food, right from the salads, continental, pizza'a and the Indian food. The dessert range is decent and for a sweet tooth like me thats where I would binge!!
The a la carte is kind of expensive but the buffet is real value for money. If you come on a weekend make sure you've done your bookings.
If you dont get a table, dont worry you have aromas of china and a Vaayu lounge on the same floor.

"You can really pig out here"
Cafe Masala, from the BJN Group, is identical in its lunch buffet setup to the lunch buffet in Indijoe, only the spread is around 50% more, and the crowd is 50% less. All in all, it is easy to walk in and get a table - even when all the tables appear full, the major-domo somehow manages to conjure up a table. Foodwise, they have a minimum of 22 dishes, ranging the entire gamut from soups to salads (do try the salads, they're excellent), pizzas, continental main course (including pastas), Chinese main course (the ubiquitous noodles and drums of heaven are there as well), Indian main courses (the biriyani is excellent, and they cook up a few surprise side dishes - some of which are mouth-watering), and at least 7 different types of dessert are always available. The prime feature in the dessert section is a chocolate fountain, which works as a fondue. So there is someting for all palates. Weekends bring in huge crowds, though, so it is better to arrive a bit early. The a-la-carte is slightly on the expensive side, but the buffet at Rs.250 is really cheap. Valet parking is available. Be sure to get the valet ticket stamped, otherwise you will be charged for parking.
