"An old elephant, atop"
One presumes the name ‘Ebony’ came about as a pun for its location atop ‘Ivory Tower’ Hotel at Barton Centre (which, by the way, I think is one of the very few visually appealing buildings in the city – at least on the exterior). The lure of ‘Ebony’ lies in the fact that it offers an open-air view of the cityscape from the 13th floor.

From my balcony seat I could hear the noisy buzz and see the smog mist of the city. Taking a scan it struck me that the only aesthetic bits of the current skyline are really what the British left behind – sloping red roofs, spires, warm stone edifices, non-native grandfather trees – Everything else is a big sea of messy square structures. It’s a pity people aren’t more concerned with architecture. [Maybe there should be a city sky-tower for the common man to be able to see what he’s doing to the earth].
The 180+ degree bird’s-eye-view evokes a greater essence – of Bangalore as a human settlement; and its plateau location as suggested by the rare rocky mound far in the hazy horizon.

But on to the food: This restaurant (which is about a decade old) was a reliable family haunt until a few years ago. Continental dinners were often; at one point whenever somebody wanted a Parsi Dhansak this was the only known place for it; and here I spent a drunken birthday with a big platter of kebabs – malai, hariyali, sheek, the lot.

The drinks list isn’t bad – the usual liquors and various cocktails of their own devise. While I had my eye on an Irish Cream mocktail, I was informed it would be "too sweet", so I had a ‘Mata Hari’ instead – pineapple, orange, grenadine, dash of cream and fizz – which turned out much too mild for me and rather overpriced.

The lunch buffet (obviously catering to office bees) was all-Indian and hardly exciting and anyway I was in the mood for a light pasta. The menu is multi-cuisine – a qualitative handful each of Indian, Oriental on the Thai side and European, but nothing very novel or experimental. The pastas were few, of which I picked a ‘Prawn, sundried tomato, cheese with Fettuccine’: This arrived in a fancy platter with a few bits of garlic bread: Although it was fairly generous, the white sauce was much too runny, with little fettuccine, making it a slurpy affair. The prawns weren’t bad, but surprisingly the sundried tomatoes were the best bit. Most startling however was the realisation, when the bill arrived, that this costs Rs. 345 - something I overlooked since all the other pastas were Rs. 245 which I think is already on a high side.

The dessert list wasn’t bad and while I was contemplating a mango mousse, no, a chocolate mud pie, I was recommended a ‘tender coconut soufflé’ and thought why not. This at first tasted like boring vanilla looking just as bland, but with an attempt to tune my palate into it I caught the subtle coconut flavour and it wasn’t bad: Much milder than my intention of chocolate excess, but an odd flavour so worth the shot.

While ‘Ebony’ is beginning to show the signs of being a tacky old restaurant, it’s still alright for a spy on the city i.e. if one doesn’t mind satisfactory but predictable food.

"True roof top experience"
The USP of this outstanding restaurant is its location. And by location, I elevate myself to 13th floor in the third dimension.
Yes, this restaurant offers you the eagle's view of jostling city called Bangalore. It offers a rather quieter indoor seating as well. But if you are in Ebony for a dinner, You'd rather prefer to sit outside to enjoy the drizzle (if you are really lucky.
But Ebony isnt all about the location and 13th floor. It is one of the best multicuisines I have even been to in Bangalore. The Minestronne soup was just like the way it should have been. treat your tastebuds with true North Indian or get exotic with any of the host of cuisines which this place offers.
My wife took me there on a surprise outing. And it really was a surprise. An overall feeling of satisfaction which cannot be descriobed but can only be felt.....
