"Same fare, Pay more"
Amaravathi, the Andhra style restaurant, which managed to attract and retain regular customers for more than a decade, for some reason is gone and is replaced by Malgudi. You walk into the restaurant and you get the feeling that you are in the same old place - that is, till you look at the menu card and then you know that this new avatar comes at a higher price.
And so, as I looked at the menu card, I realised that simple Chicken starter dishes were priced at Rs.180/- excl. taxes and all for a few paltry pieces of meat. In a city where you can actually get an entire meal for this price and that too in a restaurant with matching ambience, Malgudi really does not justify its steep prices.
Taste, of course, is great and the biriyani, the Andhra style Gongura Mamsam, Tamilnadu's Poondu Kozhambu and Kerala's Karimeen Varuthathu, give you a great choice of well cooked food, but the nearly empty restaurant speaks volumes. It is obvious, that Bangaloreans won't pay more for less and hence, Malgudi should revert to its old Amaravathi name and cuisine or bring down its prices drastically.
An empty restaurant, makes the staff also dispirited and the waiters have woebegone expressions on their faces. Why on earth would anyone who ran a successful restaurant do this to themselves, Is the question which was on the top of my mind as I walked out.
